Virtuoso (and other DBMS systems) allow some really cool stuff such as merging sql and sparql in the same queries. The main problem is that at the moment the Semantic Webb is quite difficult, and people do not see it from the developer point of view, forgetting the we should use it :D! Anyway, conferences such as Web 3.0 are shaking this "new web" idea, so in few years I think we will see some changes... hopefully :D. I'll try to explain better other point of views.
